Unless you live in a custom-built home with a luxurious bath and dressing room, you probably wish your bathroom were larger. Without adding any more square footage, you might feel less cramped if you use some of our tips to make your bathroom look and feel larger.

It's true that a small bathroom can feel cozy and intimate. But it can also feel claustrophobic and depressing. Depending on your decorating style, it can be quiet and sophisticated, charming, or sparkling like a jewel box.

No matter what style you decorate your small bath, though, it will always be a small bath.
But with a bit of visual magic, colour change and lighting, you can transform your small bath into a cozy retreat.

A bathroom is a very special space, but the theories about space enlargement apply here as to any other room in the house. Use some of these decorating tricks to make your bathroom look and feel larger, even if it stays the same size.

Select Colours for Serenity

Pale, soft colour schemes tend to give the illusions of more space. I'm not saying that the small bath has to be pink, but avoid strong, exciting colours. Use the brights for accessories and towels, but select pastel tones, neutrals, and whites for backgrounds. "Cool" colours give the feeling of serenity.

Brighten Up the Room

Without taking up any counter space, you can add extra lighting to "open up" the look of your bathroom and add interest. Recessed lighting can be installed into the ceiling and focused on any work space. Wall sconces (a candle holder) or a counter top lamp will add warmth. More expensive alternatives for bringing more light into the room would be skylights, larger windows or Solatubes.

Trade a Large Vanity for a Delicate Pedestal Sink

A vanity cabinet provides nice storage under a sink, but takes up lots of floor space in a small bathroom. Replacing the vanity with a pedestal or wall-mounted sink can be fairy inexpensive. Your bathroom will definitely feel more open. Find alternative storage space with a small shelf or organize a nearby linen cupboard. When you remove the vanity cabinet, you'll probably have to repair the flooring.

Reflect the Space with Mirrors

If your space will hold it, get a larger mirror to place in front of the bathroom sink. the mirror will reflect all the light in the room, and pick up the colour and pattern. You might consider a collection of mirrors arranged artistically in the place of one large mirror.

Choose a Light-Coloured Flooring

Just like the walls, the floor will appear to open up if it's done with a light colour. If you cannot replace the flooring, choose a large, light-coloured rug over your existing floor.

It is no surprise that Kevin McCloud is spearheading the campaign to make as many homes in Great Britain operate in a more efficient way. With 26 million homes in Britain accounting for 27% of the total carbon emissions it is no wonder Kevin is campaigning for better Government policies relating to this issue.

Old houses need to be refurbished in order to bring them up to present day Building Regulation requirements. When a house is running efficiently it is beneficial to the homeowner as well as the environment resulting in a win-win situation for everybody.

Over the last 10 years the insulation in roofs has changed dramatically especially where loft conversions are concerned. When a loft conversion is carried out by professionals it ends up being the warmest part of the house, requiring the least amount of energy to keep heated. This is even apparent in houses we would typically class as nearly new homes; this is how much insulation has improved over the years.

Window Dressing requires passion in order to provide the finishing touch to a beautiful home. There are so many varieties of materials in the market place that you are spoilt for choice but as a rule of thumb and to help you make the right design choice, you either go for a plain style and optimise the design of the curtain material or choose a plain fabric and accentuate the style.

Selecting the right fabrics is a must; here are some tips.

Natural Silk - keep to neutral colours.

Silk - a romantic fabric and very suitable for all types of blinds - wonderful colours - line in another colour for an opulent effect.

Spotted Voile - especially good used on roller blinds - a translucent fabric so leave unlined.

Open Weaves - really more of a statement than a fabric - obviously leave unlined or you loose the whole effect.

Cotton - glazed cotton adds a touch of luxury to a normal cotton material.

Novelty Cotton - looks very effective when used as a Roller Blind in contemporary setting.

It's also hard to remember all the designs that are available; here are a few....

Blinds - Roller Blinds, Roman Blinds, Austrian Blinds, Linen Fold (an alternative to net curtains), London Blind, Festoons, Cascades, Oriental Blind, Shutters and Venetians.

Artemis is currently in the process of building an extension and refurbishing the main house for a young family living in Barton-on-Sea, Hampshire; included in the refurbishment are two wet rooms, utility room, and kitchen/ family room which will require tiling. Although we have only just started the project it is important at the outset to decide which floor tiles are going to be used as it is relevant when calculating finished floor levels.

At Artemis we always recommend KDP Tiles, at Chandlers Ford as our main supplier because in addition to a well stocked and displayed showroom they have a vast warehouse which means the majority of tiles can be purchased and delivered within 48 hours. Over the many years Artemis has been using KDP, they have offered impeccable service to both their trade client and their respective customers. KDP stock all Wedi wetroom supplies who are a world reknown manufacturer.

Once the client has chosen the specific tiles they would like to use, Artemis produces a floor plan showing the tile layout, this helps the client visualise the finished floor design and eliminates wastage when calculating the amount of tiles required for each specific room.

Loft Conversions

A loft conversion is one way of extending your property without spending too much money. Bedrooms and storage are always the items you seem to need more of, the longer you live in a house.

Most loft conversions can be carried out without Planning Permission; Building Regulations being the only requirement. However it is always wise to check by calling in a reputable builder or Architect in the first instant. An experienced builder will know what will apply to your particular loft conversion and advise you correctly. If Planning Permission is required it will take 8 weeks to obtain approval and a further 5 weeks to obtain Building Regulation compliance.

At Artemis we work with Architects and Structural Engineers therefore we can provide all the necessary legal approvals to carry out your work. We also are responsible for obtaining the final paperwork which confirms that your house has a fully approved loft conversion which has been passed by Building Control and that your investment is secured.

You may wonder if you need to move out whilst work is being undertaken, well the answer is no. At Artemis we scaffold up the outside of the house and enter in through the roof, making sure normality reigns in your home whilst the work is being carried out. If you have a very small home with no storage facilities for materials or are built directly onto a pavement we widen the scaffolding platform in order for it to serve a dual purpose, i) acting as a walkway ii) supplying us with a storage area.

An experienced loft conversion company will be able to convert various types of roofs i.e. a truss roof or a cut roof only make sure if you have a truss roof the Builder has carried out this type of work before as this is a little more complicated and the builder will need to know exactly what they are doing.

Structural steel beams will be the first items to be installed and the Structural Engineer would have provided the necessary calculations to make sure the roof can be supported on the steel beams specified.
Once these are in place the joist will be hung off these beams and you will start to see the beginnings of a floor. Picture 1
Rafters normally have to be reinforced but not in all cases and the ashlar wall is installed once the rafters are ready. Collars form the final link to making the framework ready to take the insulation. Picture 2
Insulation has been increased over the years and by the time your loft conversion project is finished there is a good chance it will be more insulated than the remainder of the house.

Staircases are another item which have improved in design over the years. There is every reason your loft will be the brightest space in the house.

Velux windows are the best windows for the conventional loft conversion and these can range from a simple rectangle to a window which extends to form a balcony. In conservation properties Velux provide a specialized window however there is a superb range for these particular conversions therefore at Artemis we try and look to see which manufacturer best suits the design of the property. Friday 25 August; Fiona, one of our design team and I visited the 100% design show at Earls Court. It was a day set aside for updating Artemis with the latest design in products used for the refurbishment and interiors market. There were EVOline wireless electric sockets, which could be set anywhere retrospectively - especially useful in a study or if you required additional electric sockets in the kitchen. The additional unit operates from Kinetic Energy. EVOline also produce for the Port, modular fittings i.e. socket modules, multimedia modules, data network modules and intelligence modules to control lights, cinema screens etc. all the above ports would be hidden from view unless you decided to use them, then they would pop up by placing hand pressure on a small surface mounted plate. An ingenious idea.

There were a host of new materials which could be used for feature walls and floors ranging from a carpet measuring 3m x 3m which had petals cut into the pile of the one colour weave to specialty tempered and coloured metal which came in all colours, shapes and sizes. They were quite stunning.

The Castello luxury baths; the composite baths are manufactured with materials that offer authenticity of stone to make them hard wearing yet lighter and warmer to the touch than stone. The hidden built in overflow system and waste presents a minimalistic look to fit in to any style of bathroom.

Seamless glass - heaven! We do not have to conform any more to the statutory designs supplied by bathroom fitting companies when it comes to shower screens or partitioning - it doesn't matter how expensive the supplier is they still only offer you a small selection of shower screens to choose from. We have recently been able to design a bathroom for our client and optimise the space allocated to the walk in shower area mainly because we could design the glass to fit in with the other items in the bathroom. I think you will agree it works really well in this instance.

Congratulations to Channel 4 for producing such an informative programme surrounding the heritage of British Architecture; namely Kevin McCloud’s Grand Tour.

The programme is full of detail relating to the origin and design of some of the most prestigious buildings in Great Britain. The type of Architecture we are so privileged to benefit from in this Country originated from cities such as Paris, Genoa, Vicenza and Venice. It is said The Covent Garden Piazza resembles the Place des Vosges which was once one of the most popular meeting places in Paris during the eighteenth century. Inigo Jones formed the opinion that The Square was the most civilised way of living and gave a feeling of space compared to the dark Medieval buildings with narrow lanes he had become accustomed to seeing in London; it was this vital impression which was to be one of the main influences to transform British Architecture and the building of cities as we know today.

The Grand Tour was another name for, what we would refer to today as, the Gap year; only 300 years ago the Grand Tour lasted for several years unlike the one year which is now the custom. It was a time when affluent young men, in their early thirties, would travel to Europe to broaden their horizons. With an education in Latin and the Classics the traveller would venture south; it was considered their destiny to educate themselves whilst touring Europe and return to Britain full of inspiration. Italy with its Classical Architecture and antique ruins was considered the undisputed focus of the tour; Paris came second.

Their first call would be Paris where they would undergo a total metamorphosis; they would attire themselves in the most modern of fashionable clothing ready to venture south to Genoa which was one of the wealthiest cities of the seventeenth century. In the case of Inigo Jones, who was primarily an artist, later turned architect, his vision was to study and record the works of Andrea Palladio. Inigo sought to transform the medieval dark buildings which made up the main stay of Britain Architecture into the palatial light gracious facades we admire today. His idea fell barren in England until they were revived by Lord Campbell and Lord Burlington a century later; we have been fortunate to inherit the Palladian style of building which is now referred to as “Georgian.” It's origin was Italy.

The Brief
The brief is to design a one person living space for a wheelchair user. My client is a 25 year old composer who works full-time in the music industry. He has requested facilities to accommodate his collection of music; his guitars and a keyboard and some recording equipment. He is a sociable person, and would like space for entertaining friends. He’s not a great cook. He composes relaxing instrumental music and specifically requested that the house is designed and furnished according to the Feng Shui principles.

Analyzing the brief
What particular needs does the wheelchair user have?
Plenty of room to move around with the wheelchair
Clutter free environment
Easy access to kitchen units and appliances
Easy access to bathroom facilities
Large doorways for easy access with wheelchair

What is relaxing music? Music which helps you calm down but specifically designed to assist in pursuits such as meditation.

What is Feng Shui? Feng Shui means ‘the way of wind and water’ or ‘the natural forces of the universe’ It is the ancient Chinese practice of the placement and arrangement of any space in order to achieve harmony with the environment. It is believed to significantly affect the health, wealth, prosperity and personal relationships of individuals occupying or living in that space. It is a design principle that can create a haven of peace and calm in the home.

The rooms, furniture and features will have to be selected and positioned not only according to the Feng Shui principles but also according to the wheelchair access requirements. The kitchen will have to contain the bare essentials with easy accessible units as my client will not spend hours in the kitchen cooking. The bathroom will have to thought out carefully so as to enable easy and safe access to facilities. His guitars and collection of music will have to be stored away and be easy reachable by my client. The recording equipment and keyboard will either be placed in a specific study room or made part of an area within the house. My client has also shared with me his interest in watching movies and playing with his game console I will therefore foresee a high spec Home Theatre and gaming console within the living area.

An example of a recent project:

This Detached Country House was based in the Cotswold with 3 acres of land located to the rear and side of the property; unfortunately the rear house elevation overlooked the next door neighbours' garden, not its' own land, with rolling fields fading into the distance. The property was dark as it faced North West and desperately needed new life and light to be brought into the property. The new owners also wanted to extend the living area and install a swimming pool in the garden.

From viewing the property particulars the first thing to stand out was that the property was very bland, in fact the driveway was grey and blended in with the grey Cotswold stone; there was no softness to the property "just a mass of grey" making it very dull.

As you can see from the two sketches a softness was added to the visual appearance of the house using Oak beams - introducing timber is a good way to increase the substantial content of a building whilst making it welcoming and more interesting.

The existing front elevation of the property had a single storey lean-to extension constructed from Cotswold stone and concrete tiles. Whilst this provided additional space within the lounge it was blighted by a huge steel beam which had been installed below the existed ceiling line making it an eyesore the minute you walked into the room. Removing this single extension and constructing a double-storey, gabled front extension not only retained the additional space on the ground floor it also gave additional space to the front three bedrooms allowing an en-suite to be installed in the larger bedroom. Whilst this was a large extension it brought character to the property because of the building materials used; Oak timbers and Georgian designed glass timber windows.

It is appropriate to say at this stage that if Artemis has a steel girder to insert we go to great length to make sure it is installed above ceiling height in order for it not to be noticed.

The existing side elevation of the property (south facing) had a lean-to conservatory which was never used; it also served to block light from one of the main rooms of the house - the kitchen.

Artemis decided to utilise the side elevation to build a glass extension to the house whilst opening up the lounge and kitchen by taking out the main load bearing walls - this would bring the much needed light into the kitchen which could now be used as family room and a lounge which could now boast a snug area ideal for reading. Part of the glass extension would be single storey allowing a balcony to be built over the roof with access to the main bedroom which had the views of the land and rolling hills.

Artemis has just received a thank you card, signed by all the family living at Church Farmhouse in the Meon Valley, thanking us for the fantastic job carried out on their property. They also informed us they had just received the completion certificate from Building Control which confirms the work carried out by Artemis was to Building Control standards and is now approved thus increasing the asset value of the property. The Building Control Certificate is an important legal document and should be kept with the deeds of the property. It is moments like this, when appreciation is shown, that makes all the hard work worthwhile and gives Artemis a sense of satisfaction and fulfilment. It also has to be said Mr and Mrs M. were impeccable clients to work for!
